If there is something that we love about Tenerife it is its infinite possibilities as a holiday destination. These are the 7 natural wonders you can't miss.If there is something that we love about Tenerife it is its infinite possibilities as a holiday destination. Each island belonging to the Canary Islands has its own particular charm: Fuerteventura boasts of some of the best beaches in the world, La Gomera is a living witness of the prehistoric Laurisilva forest and Lanzarote is able to connect the artistic heritage of César Manrique with almost extra-terrestrial volcanic landscapes.

However, if we were to opt for something that defined Tenerife as a whole, we would be faced with a controversy. The largest of the seven islands is home to real wonders that every nature lover should know. Of course, this depends on tastes, but there are a number of essentials that captivate us not only for its infinite attractiveness but also for being virtually unique places in the world.

Seven natural wonders on one island

natural wonders of Tenerife

Teide Volcano and its tajinastes in bloom

If you are lucky enough to visit Tenerife during the month of May, you can’t miss this amazing scene of nature. The distinctive plant that appears in the above image is called Tajinaste and is an endemic species of the highest areas of the Canary Islands. The Teide National Park, at an altitude of over 2,000 metres, is home to a spectacular concentration of this plant, which during this month turn magenta and attracts people’s interest from all over the world. This is a unique opportunity to admire one of the most beautiful silhouettes around the highest peak in Spain. This is also the perfect time to take a nocturnal excursion through the National Park and admire the incredible starry sky that can be seen on the island’s summits. You’ll be completely captivated!

natural wonders of Tenerife

Los Gigantes cliffs

One of the mandatory visits for those who arrives in Tenerife, even more so if you are staying in the south of the island -where Hotel Suite Villa María is located-. These impressive cliffs have nothing to envy to other iconic ones like those of Ireland or Scotland, apart from being an ideal place to practice activities such as diving and kayaking, or to observe a good part of the cetaceans of our coasts. It is also worth exploring the wonders of the Rural Park of Teno or the ravine of Masca for a total immersion in the wildest nature.

The vineyards of the north

Technically, the result of the work of man is responsible for these wonderful landscapes of vineyards, but we assure you that this walk through the townships of the north will delight you. Up to three of Tenerife’s appellations of origin can be found on this route: Tacoronte Acentejo, Ycoden-Daute-Isora and Valle de la Orotava. The orchard in the north of Tenerife is one of the richest on the island and, without a doubt, the vineyards are the queens of the landscape. The humidity of the atmosphere, the views of the mountains and the smell of firewood combine perfectly with the wines of the area that, of course, you will have to try when visiting the charming guachinches (traditional restaurants) of the north.

natural wonders of Tenerife

La Tejita’s red mountain

One of the wildest and most secluded beaches in Tenerife, just a few kilometres from our hotel. The peculiar red mountain of La Tejita, just next to El Médano, is one of the most beautiful scenes offered by the nature of our island. This beach is a haven of peace, also perfect for nudists and, certainly, for windsurfers and kitesurfers, who have already become an important part of the landscape.

natural wonders of Tenerife

Icod de los Vinos’ millenary drago

The drago is the tree par excellence of the Canary Islands, but this specimen that visitors will find in Icod de los Vinos has no competitor. It is estimated that the tree is between 800-1,000 years old, and it has managed to reach up to 18 meters high and has a trunk perimeter of 20 meters. The ancient aborigines considered it a sacred tree with magical properties. Its sap acquires a blood-red colour when in contact with the air, which even led to its commercialisation in past centuries. Even though you will be able to observe a multitude of dragos in parks and natural environments during your stay on the island, none of them will be as impressive as the Icod one.

natural wonders of Tenerife

Anaga’s Massif

It isn’t the first time that we mention the Anaga Massif and Rural Park that houses this magical space on the island. Its Laurisilva forests are ideal to enjoy routes and walks in the mountains, or to admire some of the most impressive views of Tenerife. Among its best-known areas is the famous route of the Bosque Encantado (Enchanted Forest), a dream experience that will make you feel as if you were in a fairy-tale. It is also worth visiting its beaches, where the wildest sea and volcanic sand take center stage. Benijo, Almáciga and Roque de las Bodegas are capable of making anyone who chooses to visit them fall in love with them. The winding roads are steep, but we assure you that the destination is well worth it. If you also arrive hungry, in the village of Taganana you can taste the famous fried octopus in sauce. A real delight!

natural wonders of Tenerife

Cueva del viento

Also located in the town of Icod de los Vinos one finds the impressive tube of volcanic lava that has nothing to envy to those of Hawaii, South Korea or Japan. Over 27,000 years old and 17 kilometres long, it is one of the largest in the world and a benchmark for the study of geology and archaeology. Cueva del Viento has been open to the public for years and its number of visitors has not ceased, so we recommend that you book your ticket in advance. This is a great activity to do with the family – as long as the children are over five years old – so don’t miss this natural wonder. It’s a unique opportunity!
